LTTE activists released on bail in Point Pedro [TamilNet, September 30, 2003 04:38 GMT]

The Point Pedro Magistrate, Mr. K.Ariyanayagam, Monday allowed cash and surety bail to two activists of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) when they were produced in court on a complaint of abducting a private vehicle and possessing pointed weapons on September 23, legal sources said.

According to reports filed by the police in courts, the police had taken Mr.Paveanthan and Mr.Mathi of the LTTE's Sea Tigers Unit into custody at the Vallipuram checkpoint of the SLA, sources said.

The Police filed plaints Monday, charging the LTTE activists for abducting a vehicle belonging to an individual and taking pointed weapons and concealing them in the vehicle, court sources said.

When the LTTE activists were produced in court Monday, the Magistrate allowed them cash and surety bail. On the first charge they were allowed on cash bail of five thousand rupees and surety bail of 20 thousand rupees with two sureties each. On the second charge they were allowed surety bail, legal sources said

Further inquiry into the cases was put off for October 18, court sources said.
