Security Report Srilanka - Police Commandos open fire on LTTE boat in Ampara [22 Feb 2001]

Police Special Task Force (STF) personnel lying in ambush, opened fire on a LTTE boat, which later disappeared with their casualties at Kanchikudiaru tank in Ampara district on the afternoon of February 21, the Special Media Information Centre (SMIC) said.

Terrorist radio transmission confirmed that three of their cadres were injured and one was missing. It also revealed the names of those injured as Chulaban, Saththian, Wisuanath and the missing one as Saundaraj. There were no casualties among the STF troops.

LTTE mortar fire was reported from Muhamalai Ponnar and Nagarkovil on February 20 and 21. One soldier was wounded in Ponnar on the same day around 2 pm due to mortar fire of the terrorists. On soldier sustained injuries due to an anti-personnel mine on February 21.

Engineer troops on a clearing operation recovered 34 anti-personnel mines from the Muhamalai area and 38 anti-personnel mines from the Eluthumadduval area on February 20. These anti-personnel mines were defused.

On February 21 engineer troops in Madduvil on a clearing patrol recovered two improvised explosive devices and five anti-personnel mines, which were later destroyed.

Security Forces operating in Kaithady recovered 1139 rounds of T56 ammunition, 660 rounds of machine gun ammunition and one light machine gun drum on February 21.
