DPU Unit ambushed, one soldier killed

A Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Deep Penetration Unit (DPU) has been ambushed inside the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) administered village of Periya Thampaani in Vavuniya North.

LTTE cadres have recovered the body of an SLA soldier, along with night vision goggles and other 'highly sophisticated' military equipments.

The body is being taken to Kilinochchi, and will be handed over to officials from the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) as soon as possible.

In recent weeks, SLA DPU units have launched several attacks against civilians in the area.

Last week, a school principle and an education authority officer were killed when the SLA exploded a claymore mine at them.

The following day, a family of four were seriously injured in a similar attack, while on their way to church.

The DPU carries out mine attacks inside LTTE administered areas. In recent weeks it had made good use of the low presence of LTTE cadres in areas surrounding Madu Church, the most revered Christian shrine on the island.
