Human rights and police might by T. Chandrasekera

The Jaffna Police turned away three officials of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission in Jaffna when they attempted to enter the police barracks on Monday.

Human Rights officials said that they had visited the Jaffna Police station to check for the safety of an inmate allegedly being detained in violation of his rights. "Then we heard a shout from the police barracks, where we thought the inmate, Ratnasingham Chandramohan was kept. We tried to enter the barracks but then policemen in civvies threw us out," Jaffna HRC Investigation Officer, M. B. Z. Feros said.

The Jaffna HRC office is investigating a complaint by the parents of R. Chandramonhan (21), that he had gone missing since last Sunday.

The Jaffna HRC office had complained to their Colombo Head office of police preventing them from visiting the police station.

HQI Jaffna Police, Wickramratne said outsiders had no authority to enter the police barracks.

"We made it very clear to them that we were not holding the said person. But they attempted to enter the barracks forcibly. So the police had to shut them out."
