Danes want EU and govt. to ban LTTE

Anti- Tiger wave engulfs Denmark

Copenhagen 23 September, (Asiantribune) Hot on the heels of the anti-LTTE wave in Canada, the organisation is faced with an unexpected onslaught in Denmark.

Four political parties in Denmark including one party in the ruling coalition urged the government to proscribe the LTTE.

Denmark is among the Scandinavian countries represented in the Norwegian-led Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) responsible for supervising the truce between the government and the LTTE.

The state owned radio DR-1 went a step further urging the authorities to propose to the European Union to proscribe the LTTE.

Four political parties including Danish People’s Party (DPP) and Christian Democratic Party (CPD) have appealed to the Danish Foreign Minister to ban entry of LTTE cadres into Denmark as they are known to involve in violent acts of terror in the name of their liberation struggle.

They lodged a protest when LTTE senior member Velupillai Balakumar declared, at a press conference in Copenhagen, that LTTE suicide cadres are ready to activate suicide bombs in the event fighting between the government forces and LTTE start once again.

The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Peter Skaarup said that the government would look into the issue and ban LTTE cadres from entering Denmark if they propagate terrorism.

Balakumar, who was in Norway to attend the annual function of Tamil Sangam of Oslo, a well-known LTTE front organisation last month. He is currently on a fund raising campaign in Europe.

DPP and CPD urged the other political parties, such as the Denmark Socialist People’s Party, and the Socialist Democratic Party, to participate in their campaign against the LTTE.

The Danish language daily news paper Metro Xpress on Wednesday reported that LTTE remained banned in United States of America, Canada, Great Britain, and Australia and Balakumar was not allowed to enter those countries.

After the refusal of entry in those countries, he (Balakumar) has come to Norway, which is a safe haven for terrorists and from Oslo he arrived in Denmark. "A self proclaimed militant is able to move around freely in our country," the Metro Xpress said. The newspaper demanded that immediate action should be taken through the Denmark parliament to ban the outfit in the European Union. The newspaper said that Balakumar is the trainer of suicide squads and the suicide squad is responsible for the killing of thousands of innocent civilians including women and children. The newspaper recalled that LTTE suicide bombers killed many opponents and even the former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The Danish move will be a major

hurdle for the proposed European tour of top ranking LTTE group beginning later this month. LTTE political wing leader S Paramu Thamilselvan is expected to lead the group.
