42 Tigers surrendered - SLA [TamilNet, September 30, 1998 14:20 GMT]

The Sri Lankan Army (SLA) SLA claimed this evening that 42 Liberation Tigers surrendered to its troops that took control of Mankulam today. The SLA is flying a group of Sri Lankan journalists to Anuradhapura to see the alleged surrendees. Sources in Vavuniya claimed that only 26 boys and girls, alleged to be LTTE fighters, were brought to Vavuniya this afternoon.

Meanwhile, Red Cross officials in Vavuniya said that the ICRC arrived at the Poovarasankulam SLA point on the Vavuniya Mannar road with the 600 bodies of soldiers killed in Kilinochchi late this afternoon around 4.30 p.m. The ICRC brought the bodies in 22 vehicles they said.

The Liberation Tigers announced in the Vanni this evening that until now they have recovered 700 bodies of the soldiers killed in Kilinochchi and that they will be handing over another batch of bodies to the ICRC.

They said that their troops are still engaged in collecting more bodies that are scattered in SLA bunkers and the surrounding shrub jungles.

According to SLA sources in Vavuniya, the army has started identifying the bodies but the work cannot be completed tonight.

LTTE's political wing leader Thamil Chelvan had handed over the bodies to the ICRC's Vanni delegate this morning.
