US funds, SL Army labour renovate Trinco school

A section of the Kanniya Mixed Government School in Trincomalee was opened on Monday after renovations funded by the American Chamber of Commerce in Sri Lanka (AMCHAM). Labour for the refurbishment had been provided by the Sri Lanka Army.

The school, which has about 400 students, was refurbished by engineer units of the Sri Lanka Army following a technical survey to ensure that the school and its grounds were free of land mines.

The technical survey, which confirmed that over seven thousand square meters of ground were free of mines, was carried out by personnel from the Sri Lanka Army under the technical supervision of the US-based RONCO Corporation. RONCO has been providing demining training, equipment, and technical oversight to the demining units of the Sri Lanka Army since 2003.

Following the technical survey, the roofs, sanitary facilities, and outbuildings of the school were renovated with Rs. 200,000 raised by AMCHAM at the Ambassador's Ball held earlier this year.
