Mystery over missing soldier

The Army's Military Police is likely to take disciplinary action against a soldier who had deserted the Army two years ago, triggering speculation that he was allegedly killed by a Sergeant attached to Maj. Gen. Nanda Mallawarachchi's security escort, security sources said.

The Veyangoda Police was able to arrest the soldier last week. It is alleged that his father had filed a case demanding Rs. 1 million as compensation for the loss of his son.

Police also said they were looking to arrest the suspect soldier in connection with another offence but did not know he had been missing.

The soldier had been deployed at Maj. Gen. Mallawarachchi's residence when he went missing.

Later the Sergeant admitted to having assaulted the soldier for a misdemeanour but continuously denied killing him. It is also being probed now to see whether any party had instigated the soldier to take this course of action.
