Army Lieutenant given bail: Summons on military police by Leary Beekmeyer

Colombo Fort magistrate Sarath C. Karunaratne granted personal bail in Rs. 400,000 to an army lieutenant who was allegedly involved along with another person in the robbery of a van at gun point at Galle Face green and also attempting to steal a weapon from a homeguard at a Kantalai checkpoint.

The magistrate also issued summons on the military police in order to hand over the suspect to them.

The suspect, R. Jayakody an army lieutenant was arrested by the Kantalai police and produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate on information that he was involved in robbing a businessman's van in Colombo.

Police stated that the businessman, an owner of a tailor shop at Bauddhaloka Mawatha in Colombo 7 had come to the Fort Railway Station with a friend. On his way back around 5 a.m. the businessman was confronted by three persons at Galle Face who ordered him to stop the vehicle. They had told the businessman that they were policemen and wanted to take the van to the police station. The complainant being suspicious of the three persons had left the van and had run away.

The van was stopped at a checkpoint at Kantalai. One occupant of the van who attempted to grab a weapon from a home guard was shot dead. Thereafter the van was taken into custody by the Kantalai police who informed the Fort police.
