Alleged looting by police by Rebecca Fleming

The Colombo Chief Magistrate on Friday ordered to produce three police officers attached to the Ministry Security unit and two others for an identification parade before the Mt. Lavinia and Pugoda Magistrates. The suspects were arrested in connection with two incidents of looting while involved in selling treasure items .

Following this order Colombo Chief Magistrate Sarojini Kusala Weerawardene cancelled the due identification parade to be held at the Colombo Magistrate's Court on that day. The Magistrate ordered the suspects to be produced before Pugoda and Mt. Lavinia Magistrate's courts on November 10 and 18. The Magistrate ordered the suspects remanded till November 19.

Police Sergeants Gamini Liyanage and P.V. Don Vipula, Police Constable Watawala Ravi Dissanayake, and Subramaniam Vijeyaraja and David Michael were the suspects remanded.

When the suspects were produced before the Magistrate, the Cinnamon Garden's police made an application to further remand the suspects. The suspects had been looting in Wellawatte, Peradeniya and Pugoda areas earlier, the police informed.

Attorney-at-Law Sanjaya Gamage, Gunasiri Lunuwila and Mervyn Silva appearing for the suspects said that there was no point of an identification parade as the suspects had already been shown on television. Police said that investigations into the incident were not over.

The police had arrested the five following a complaint made by Vasantha Asoka Mudunkotuwa of Nugegoda. The case will be taken up on November 19.
