Partial resettlement in Kilinochchi [TamilNet, November 08, 1998 16:22 GMT]

The Liberation Tigers have told civilians displaced from Kilinochchi during the Sri Lankan Army's (SLA) 'Operation Sath Jaya' in 1996 that they would allow them to re-settle in areas between Murigandy and bus depot junction, an area of about 9 km. Kilinochchi was captured by the SLA in August 1996. The Tigers captured the town from the SLA last month.

The Tigers had earlier warned civilians to not to go to some parts of Kilinochchi that had not been cleared for mines and booby traps. Sources said 17 civilians who had gone to these areas had been wounded.

Meanwhile security was tightened in the eastern Batticaloa town this morning said sources there.

All the main roads in the Batticaloa town were closed to public traffic between 7.45 and 9.45 this morning they said further.

Senior officials from all three forces met at the Batticaloa Police Head Office to review the security situation there they added.
