Sri Lanka troops kill eight Tigers ahead of truce [Apr 12 2001 18:33 IST ]

COLOMBO, April 12 (AFP) - Sri Lankan security forces ambushed and killed at least eight Tamil Tiger guerrillas ahead of a limited New Year truce, the defence ministry said Thursday.

Troops killed five members of the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) at Ethawetunuwewa on Wednesday as the government announced a truce would go into effect from midnight Thursday until Tuesday morning.

Another three suspected Tiger rebels were killed in the same area, the defence ministry said in a statement.

The ministry listed Wednesday the names of 10 people it said were LTTE cadres under "arrest" and said they would be freed, without giving any indication of when.

Among the 10 names were two members of the majority Sinhalese community.

The government's truce call came as the LTTE maintained a one-sided ceasefire they called on Christmas Eve and have repeatedly extended. It is currently due to expire on April 24.

The LTTE have also freed several security personnel and merchant sailors held hostage for several years as a goodwill gesture to push Norway's attempts to broker peace on the island.

Over the weekend, the Tigers issued fresh demands that the government lift a ban on them, ease economic sanctions and reciprocate their truce before entering peace talks.

There has been no formal response from the Colombo government to the latest Tiger demands.

Norway has been trying to broke peace talks for nearly two years, but has failed to arrange a face-to-face meeting between the two antagonists.

However, Oslo has said it undertook the role of a third-party facilitator because it was optimistic of bringing an end to the conflict which has claimed over 60,000 lives in the past two decades.
