Former UNP MP indicted By W. Hubert Fernando

Former UNP member of Parliament for the Gampaha district Olitha Premathirathna was indicted before the Negombo High Court Judge, Tudor Gunaratne on Thursday over an incident of releasing unlawfully, a person who was in custody of the Seeduwa police.

The indictment was handed over to Karunamuni de Silva Olitha Premathiratna (36), residing at "Samadhi", Seeduwa.

A case has been filed against Mr. Premathiratna on three charges - releasing unlawfully on or about March 30, 2003 a person named Sarath Kumarasena (40) who was in custody in the Seeduwa police, threatening the then O.I.C. of the Seeduwa police station and not allowing him to perform his duties as a government servant and motivating Reserve Police Constable (10911), D.M. Ranjith Dayananda, to release the suspect.

The person named Sarath Kumarasena was taken into custody in connection with a vehicle accident. In the complaint it had been mentioned that he is a strong U.N.P. supporter. The High Court Judge ordered the release of Mr. Premathiratna on cash bail of Rs. 5,000 and personal bail of Rs. 50,000 with two sureties. In the conditions for bail, it is mentioned that the two sureties should be residents of the Seeduwa area.

The High Court Judge who ordered Mr. Premathiratna to give his fingerprints to the Police, postponed further hearing till January 17, 2005. State Counsel, Sanjeewa Disanayake appeared for the prosecution while Attorney-at-Law, Edward Rodrigo, appeared for the accused.
