"Centre concerned over LTTE activities"

With the series of recent arrests of LTTE cadres from Tamil Nadu, the concern over LTTE spreading its network across Tamil Nadu, Kerala and the rest of the country has become a major cause of concern for the Indian government.

Reiterating the concern, the National Security Advisor -- M K Narayanan -- has expressed worry over LTTE activities both in Tamil Nadu and the rest of the country. He has said that India is closely monitoring the LTTE and is maintaining round-the-clock vigil along the coastline.

Shockingly, in the past fourteen months, around eleven LTTE cadres were arrested from Tamil Nadu in the past fourteen months. Recently, three men were arrested with high tech communication equipments just before being shipped to the Tigers in Sri Lanka.

Moreover, increased arrests and seizures along the Tamil Nadu coastline have renewed worries about the deep links that the tigers have entrenched in the region.

The LTTE spreading wings to neighbouring Kerala has also raised profound concern. A concern that was echoed by the National Security Advisor -- M K Narayanan -- after meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Monday (Dec 17).

However, despite the serious crackdown on the LTTE in Tamil Nadu, the Tigers still enjoy a wide political and emotional support in the state with many political parties openly supporting them.

The National Security Advisor is also burdened with the delicate job of placating the Congress's biggest ally- the DMK - which like other Dravidian political parties has opposed any military aid to Sri Lanka including joint naval patrolling.

It is going to be a long drawn out battle before the government can effectively clamp down on the LTTE with several political forces in Tamil Nadu proudly flaunting their links to the Tigers.
