LTTE opens fire on Navy off Trinco

LTTE cadres opened fire at a naval craft off the Trincomalee seas on Sunday morning.

Military sources said the Navy came under LTTE small-arms fire directed from un-cleared areas in Sampoor while troops were taking two Tiger surrendees to be handed over to the Trincomalee Harbour Police from the Muttur Jetty.

The LTTEers fired at least 30-40 rounds towards the craft. The two thirteen-year-olds were reportedly abducted by the LTTE about two months ago and given weapons training in a camp in Sampoor.

However, the teenagers had escaped and sought protection earlier on Sunday at the Naval detachment in the old jetty at Neidanagar.

Despite heavy troops refrained from retaliating since another passenger ferry was approaching the pier. This deliberate Tiger act aimed at provoking the troops was reported to SLMM.
