Heavy fighting reported in Eluthumadduval [TamilNet, September 26, 2000 14:44 GMT]

Fighting is reported between Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troops and the Liberation Tigers in the Eluthumadduval-Nagar Kovil axis along the lines held by the SLA. Sources said clashes began around 4pm Tuesday

Fighting is heavy in the forward defence localities of the SLA in the Eluthumadduval sector, Army sources said. Some of the SLA's forward positions have been overrun they said.

The reports could not be independently verified as reporters are not permitted to enter the war zones.

The SLA fell back to Eluthumadduval, southeast of Chavakachcheri town on the A9 highway, after the Liberation Tigers overran the strategic Elephant Pass base complex in April this year and advanced north, taking the town of Palai on the way.
