Nine Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers were killed when the tractor in which they were travelling was hit by a powerful claymore mine blast north of Omanthai, around 7.30 p.m. Tuesday, security sources in Vavuniya said. One soldier was wounded.

The sources said soldiers were taking supplies to troops at the SLA's forward defence lines from a camp at Omanthai, about 14 km. north of Vavuniya when the Liberation Tigers set off the blast.

Reinforcement were sent to the area and a search was conducted, the sources added
