The split in the Karuna faction has deepened with reports that its spokesman Azad Maulana and close aids of Karuna had fled the country fearing retribution. On Wednesday night a relative of the Ampara military wing leader was shot dead while rumors spread that more Karuna associates were believed to have been shot dead over the last few days by loyalists of the group’s intelligence head Pillayan who split from Karuna following an internal dispute. However, none of the reports could be confirmed as political officials of the Karuna faction were not willing to speak to the media over the emerging reports.
