SLA deep penetration attacks increase in Vavuniya

Ilayathamby Balasubramaniam, 54, was seriously injured and his lorry severely damaged Sunday around 12.30 p.m. in a claymore explosion triggered by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) deep penetration unit in Vavuniya north, 7 miles east of A9 highway , in the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) controlled area in the Vavuniya district, said sources from Vavuniya.


The heavy vehicle came under claymore attack between Ananatharpuliyankulam and Samalankulam, north of Semamadu, on its way to transport paddy, seriously injuring its Balasubramaniam's leg. He was taken immediately to Vavuniya for treatment, said the sources.

S. Gnanam, Vavuniya head of the LTTE political wing, registering a complaint regarding this incident to the Cheif of Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) in Vavuniya who arrived at Pulliyankulam, took the SLMM to the site of attack, where a SLA cap was recovered as evidence, added sources.

Recently, five Tamils were killed in six separate claymore attacks by SLA deep penetrating units into the LTTE controlled area in Vanni besides three Tamils who went hunting hacked to death by the SLA unit, said sources in Vavuniya.
