According to a front page report in the "Island" of Monday the 4th October 2004 the government has escorted 96 LTTE cadres to Muttur on Saturday the 2nd October. On Sunday the 3rd October the LTTE has killed two senior Karuna loyalists and wounded three others who later managed to escape. Sending 96 LTTE cadres to the East has to be to facilitate the LTTE to wipe out Karuna. If not for what other reason could it be? It has to be remembered that as soon as the rift between the LTTE and Karuna was known this government sent LTTE troops by land and by sea to disable Karuna. What all this means to us is that this government is determined to get rid of Karuna and is prepared to escort as many cadres to the East as are deemed necessary.
The ISGA proposals are not the brain child of the LTTE. They are now asking what was offered to them by this government as an undefined interim rule for 10 years without the consent of parliament and the people through a referendum as if this country was the personal property of this government. The LTTE has only defined the undefined interim rule and are now asking for it. The UNP signed the infamous MoU without the consent of parliament to which this government made no opposition and has now accepted the very same MoU demonstrating very clearly that this government was in full agreement with the UNP originated MoU even though it did not sign it.
After over 20 years of untold human suffering and lowering standards of living this government was put into power because it promised that the country will never be sold but there are signs that it may agree to talk on the sale of the country through the ISGA. For this the UNP would be ever willing to support this government and the two may even join hands for the sale as they did in 2001.
Ven. Elle Gunawansa has issued two very clear warnings to the government that it would be toppled if it ever agreed to talk on the sale of the country through the ISGA. When Ven. Elle Gunawansa speaks he does so with the full backing of the JVP as has been clearly demonstrated at many public meetings. Today the JVP has the power to match its words because it has the backing of the people and the monks and the machinery to do so. What all this amounts to is that the JVP has issued a challenge to the government and the people are confident of the outcome if the government were to decide to sell the country. People now no longer live in fear as they have done for the last 11 years. Relief could come very soon.
