Cricketer assault case settled By Elation D. Amerasinghe

Signalling the end of a different kind of innings, court brought about an amicable settlement to the case where a national cricketer had accused two Army personnel of assaulting him on or about August 21, at Gangodawila.

Sri Lanka cricketer Upul Chandana had accused two soldiers of the Sri Lankan Army of inflecting minor injuries by assaulting the cricketer.

Chief magistrate and additional district Judge Padmini N. Ranawaka ordered the accused to offer an apology in open court for any inconvenience caused to Upul Chandana.

She also ordered the accused to donate Rs. 500/- each to the Maharagama Cancer Hospital and produce the receipts on October 7.

The two accused Army personnel S.P. Gamini Seneviratne and M. Priyantha Gamini, the driver and a body guard of a senior Army officer, pleaded leniency.

The prosecution stated that the victim's infant son had undergone severe shock due to the incident, but agreed to settle the case amicably.
