Over 30 terrorists killed as troops destroy stronghold - The Island - 2nd July 2000


The Special Media Information Centre reported that in the early hours of last Friday, security forces launched an operation to destroy a terrorist strong point in general area Ethawetunuwewa, in Weli Oya.

Troops supported by artillery assaulted the terrorist strong point completely destroying it. Monitored terrorist transmissions revealed that over thirty terrorists including two leaders identified as Yeevakumar and Ramani have been killed in this attack. One officer and eight soldiers were killed while nineteen soldiers were wounded. A further twenty four soldiers received minor injuries. Troops recovered 08 T56 weapon, a M16 weapon, a T56 Light Machine Gun a 60mm Mortar tube and a 60 mm Granade launcher, it said.

In Jaffna troops operating ahead of the defences in Colombothurai, Attarai, Chemmani and Nagar Kovil areas have killed eight terrorists during the past twenty four hours. One soldier was killed and five were wounded during these confrontations. SMIC said in a statement.
